TOOLKIT: STORY CARDS
SUBJECT: EARLY CHILDHOOD

GRADE: recommended PreK-3rd grade
Students will learn about the concept of history, i.e. a sequence of past events which determine the present.
Students will study objects through art as clues into the past.
1. What objects do you see? Describe the space.
2. Do these objects look new or old? What was this space used for in the past? What is it used for now (in the present)? Is it the same or different?
3. What event(s) may have happened here? Is the artist trying to tell us something?

Using pictures from magazines, old books or photos, choose three to five different images. The images do not have be related in theme. Cut the images out and glue each image to a different index card. Using the images as your source for inspiration, create a story. Though your story can be as imaginative as possible, make sure it has a beginning, middle and end (i.e. “First … then … finally …”). Tell it to the group. Mix the cards up and make a new story.
Using standard size dominos, stand individual dominos up vertically to create a line (any kind of line or shape and as long as you want). Decide which end is the start (or past), and carefully tap that domino. Watch what happens! Did all the dominos fall down in sequence? Did anything unusual or unexpected happen? Can you think of an event in your life similar to the line of dominos? Something which started in the past with a sequence of events?
