FREE with Museum Admission
Museum Lobby @ 500 Sampsonia Way
Join us for an afternoon of weaving-based art as we give visitors a chance to create their own loom to make a wild weaving mixed media collage or use a forked tree branch to create a colorful hanging art piece. This ARTLab is inspired by Chiharu Shiota's yarn-based installation at the 516 Gallery titled Trace of Memory in which Shiota uses yarn as a three-dimensional drawing material--a process that is quite meditative and produces a sense of memory and references the traditional domestic activity of knitting.
Twice a month, on the first and third Saturdays, visitors are invited to participate in a range of art-making activities that illuminate the creative process of in-residence artists. Projects and materials are developed to complement current and ongoing exhibitions. This program is free with museum admission and highly recommended for individuals or families with children of all ages.
Mattress Factory Education and Community progams are made possible by the generous support from the Allegheny Regional Assets District, Milton & Sally Avery Arts Foundation, Jack Buncher Foundation, Sheila Fortune Foundation, Grable Foundation, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and Surdna Foundation.
