Antoine Catala

French, b. 1975
Antoine Catala began exploring video compression technologies around the same time that Takeshi Murata's pixel-based work became known to a larger audience. Catala, born in the South of France and schooled in London, came to New York about four years ago. Influenced by the early performance work of Dan Graham (he worked as his assistant for several years) and the video work of Paper Rad, Ryan Trecartin, and Murata, Catala began finding his own articulation of "compression errors," around 2002-03.
