INSTALL: Afternoons @ the Factory [Grades 3-5]

Spend your Wednesday afternoons hanging out at the Mattress Factory! Participating students work directly with artists to explore themes such as collaboration, tolerance, and spatial experience, all within the context of contemporary art practice. Artists and museum educators provide academic, emotional, and creative support while broadening students’ way of thinking and increasing exposure to adults with diverse backgrounds and careers.

The Mattress Factory’s after-school program is FREE for students, and is endorsed by Pittsburgh Public Schools as an official partner and is recognized as a “Quality Campaign Member” by Allegheny Partners for Out-of-School Time (APOST).

Upcoming Programs Include:

Wednesdays, September 12 - December 5, 2018 from 4 - 6pm
[No class November 21]
The Everyday with Raiona Daisa
Students will explore how art intersects with, is supported by, and grows out of everyday activities, and how the everyday is itself art. Taking inspiration from commonplace objects or phenomena like the street, boredom, or repetitive activities, students will create a built environment using the artifacts they acquire and create along the journey.

December 5, 2018 from 5:30 - 7pm

Wednesdays, January 9 - February 13, 2019 from 4 - 6pm
[Alternate snow day February 20]
Building a Dreamscape with Sarah Moore
Using a variety of materials and techniques, students will design and construct a physical space from their dreams. Using cardboard, fabric, and other recycled materials, they will build furniture, paint wallpaper, weave rugs, and construct decorations for a physical room that doubles as an art piece and a collaborative dreamscape.

Wednesdays, March 6 - May 29, 2019 from 4 - 6pm
[No class April 17]
Where the Rauschenberg Wild Things Are with Hudson Rush
By combining Where the Wild Things Are with Robert Rauschenberg’s artmaking techniques, students will create their own worlds full of monsters and mayhem. Along with 3-D versions of their creatures and their habitats, students will write their own illustrated books to tell their stories of wild rumpus fun.

May 29, 2019 from 5:30 - 7pm
