Conversation with Artistic Director Anthony Elms

Meet Mattress Factory's
New Artistic Director

We’re thrilled to welcome Anthony Elms, Mattress Factory’s new Artistic Director. Join us for an evening of conversation and community as Anthony shares his curatorial history, artistic influences, and thoughts on the future of artist centered programming.

Anthony comes to the Mattress Factory following a remarkable tenure at the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania, where he served as Chief Curator. His work is marked by a deep respect for the artistic process and a commitment to amplifying overlooked narratives through printed matter, archives, and interdisciplinary experimentation.
Over the years, Elms has curated groundbreaking exhibitions including Cauleen Smith: Give It or Leave It, Endless Shout, and Rodney McMillian: The Black Show, and co-curated the Whitney Biennial in 2014. His curatorial practice often brings together performance, literature, visual art, and music, resonating with Mattress Factory’s ethos of bold, process-driven, site-specific work.

Joining Elms in conversation is Hamza Walker, director of The Brick

The Brick was founded as LAXART in 2005 by Lauri Firstenberg as a platform for emerging and under-recognized artistic talent in Los Angeles. Since that time, The Brick has realized over 400 projects, characterized by newly commissioned artworks and solo projects in its gallery and public spaces.

In October 2016, Hamza Walker became The Brick’s second director after twenty-two years as Curator and Director of Education at the Renaissance Society in Chicago. Under Walker’s leadership, The Brick has deepened its mission and exhibition program to include thematic group exhibitions, new work with historical figures, and institutional-scale projects with emerging and established artists.
