Through the rhythms of Afrobeat, Dancehall, Soukous, Coupé Décalé, Soca, Zouk and more, this experience invites you to dance the night away in community.
As an extension of Marvin Touré’s exhibition, the blood is the water., nights on the river. presents a unique experience rooted in the artist’s memories. Touré grew up hearing stories of his family’s early years in America. West African Immigrants from Côte d’Ivoire in the 1980’s & 90’s striving to navigate their new environment amidst the challenges of life here. Music and food were key elements in providing the connective tissue that brought everyone together. From cookouts to nights at the legendary Club Kilimanjaro in Washington D.C, they built family here.
Samples of authentic plantain dishes from across the diaspora will be provided to guests throughout the evening.
