Support Mattress Factory before the end of 2023 by purchasing a signed, limited-edition artist print. We’re thrilled to revive the museum’s Limited Edition Print Program, offering artists a platform to craft small-scale artworks that are accessible long after their temporary installations are gone. This year, three visionary Mattress Factory artists-in-residence, Asim Waqif, Katie Bullock, and Luke Stettner, have created authentic pieces of artwork. These collectible prints are limited to an edition of 77, a nod to our founding year, and are available for $300 each. Asim Waqif's limited edition is a photograph capturing his 2023 installation Assume the Risk. This photograph stands out with its multiple exposures of the installation, artistically spiraling outward to create a visually compelling effect. The installation itself is a testament to Waqif's innovative approach to art, where he invites viewers to engage with the artwork in a dynamic and interactive manner, breaking the conventional barriers between artwork and viewer. The installation, sourced from various materials including items from a former flashlight factory and architectural salvage, is a sprawling sculptural composition. It is further brought to life with strategically placed microphones and speakers, creating an ambient soundscape that reacts to visitor movements.

Asim Waqif, an Indian artist born in 1978, has a background in architecture and has delved into various artistic mediums, including sculpture, public installations, and interactive technologies. His works often explore themes of urban planning, ecology, and anthropology, with a focus on manual, labor-intensive processes, and the temporality of his creations.

Katie Bullock, These Lightest Fragments, 2023

Katie Bullock's limited edition print is created from a detailed and meticulous drawing of a glacier originally included in her 2023 exhibition As Seen from the Surface. The striking feature of Bullock's print is the shimmering graphite quality, a small and intimate glacier in large silvery expanses, which catches light in a dynamic way.

In her installation Bullock brings an intriguing combination of elements to life. Diagrammatic drawings, sourced from books and her own videos and photographs form a geometric pattern reminiscent of the Didactic Chart. The installation functions as both an observatory and a library, with works added throughout its duration. This blend of elements crafts a contemporary cabinet of curiosities, focusing on the minute yet significant aspects of nature.

Bullock's artistic practice is deeply rooted in observation and research. She focuses on the everyday phenomena encountered in routine activities, exploring their variable scales and transient nature. Her art reflects a keen awareness of the world's interconnectedness, seeking meaning through a synthesis of observed reality and introspective research. This print of the glacier is not just a visual representation but also an invitation to ponder the deeper connections between the personal and the universal, the fleeting and the enduring.

Luke Stettner, State of Things, 2023

Luke Stettner's limited edition print combines the poetic and the visual to create an abstract yet specific representation of the world. Titled State of Things, the print features a letterpress poem that organizes a range of human and organic terms in alphabetical order, offering a unique linguistic exploration of our environment. Complementing the poem is a collaged image of a hand holding burdock seeds, an important element in Stettner's 2023 Mattress Factory installation State of the Sky at the Mattress Factory. This combination of text and imagery underscores Stettner's interest in the intersection of natural and human-made worlds, a theme central to his work.

Stettner's work at Mattress Factory is more than an exhibition; it's a continuation of the narrative of Allegheny City, drawing on the history of the observatory and its challenges in observing the stars amidst industrial pollution. By bridging the past and present, Stettner creates a dialogue spanning centuries, inviting reflection on the complex relationship between human endeavors and the natural world. State of Things encapsulates this dialogue, merging the poetic with the visual in a compelling representation of our interconnected world.

In the mid-1980s, Mattress Factory initiated the Artist Limited Edition Series to provide our exhibiting artists with the opportunity to create permanent, small scale works that are accessible to the public long after their temporary installation is gone. These prints also serve as documentation of each artists way of engaging with the creative process.
