Matthew McCaslin

16 on Center

1990

This play is a reflection on the (im)possibility of accepting diversity and the other. The fragmented body of the neoplasm—the fruit of unstable conditions—overcomes barriers, loves and denies itself and others, wanders around, forgetting its profession. It frequently and with pleasure divides, goes through dangerous palpation, questions the possibility of contact with the experience of the other. Poorly brought up but very successful, it invites us to a trans-species transition.

McCaslin installed 6 walls of metal studs, which are standard building materials. The studs in each wall are 16 inches apart, and each wall is installed 16 inches from the next wall. As a group, they separate the room's entrance from its windows. It is possible for a person to slip through the spaces to stand amidst the studs.

At the bottom of the stairs leading to the gallery, a coil of electrical cable, with metal covering, placed on the floor, encircling a lightbulb.

Artist Statement

The in-between, to be somewhere, to be in a room, to be in a wall, to be in your mind, to be in my mind. A workplace, a domestic place, any place, every place. The journey, the continual, letting go to find out from within.
