An opponent of the war constructs a monument to a president in a strange place: a low cupboard on an attic story. A roll of the war dead, respectfully inscribed and capable of being read only on one’s knees, is surrounded with symbols of war, vainglory and decay. The artist, a distinguished bookmaker and calligrapher invokes Shelley’s poem Ozymandias, which surveys the remains of wasted empire.
