Our Mission

The Mattress Factory is an artist-centered museum, international residency program and renowned producer and presenter of installation art. We say “yes” to artists, offering time and space to dream and realize projects in our hometown, Pittsburgh, PA. We invite audiences from around the world and around the corner to step inside, immerse and connect with the artistic process.

Inside, Outside, Inside: walls are built

2012

This play is a reflection on the (im)possibility of accepting diversity and the other. The fragmented body of the neoplasm—the fruit of unstable conditions—overcomes barriers, loves and denies itself and others, wanders around, forgetting its profession. It frequently and with pleasure divides, goes through dangerous palpation, questions the possibility of contact with the experience of the other. Poorly brought up but very successful, it invites us to a trans-species transition.

Artist Statement

Social Sublime Action Art Chill with us, against us, and next to us. Deconstruction: a systematic way of disassembling a building that favors labor over machine, reuse over waste, and embodied energy, accounting for the sun, the soil, and what it takes to create the resources that it takes to build a building. Deconstruction: a possibility for reconsidering, a choice in activating our relationship with buildings that often mirror our histories. Join us in this fold, from our neighborhood, where we know it will need to happen slowly. Where imagining it is the the architecture of the relationships we build. Transformazium works to combine the human and material resources available in our neighborhood with creative action and active communication in order to transform ideas into tangible social and economic benefits while developing models that can be used by other neighborhoods facing similar challenges.
