Pablo Valbuena

Para-Site [mattress factory]

2011

This play is a reflection on the (im)possibility of accepting diversity and the other. The fragmented body of the neoplasm—the fruit of unstable conditions—overcomes barriers, loves and denies itself and others, wanders around, forgetting its profession. It frequently and with pleasure divides, goes through dangerous palpation, questions the possibility of contact with the experience of the other. Poorly brought up but very successful, it invites us to a trans-species transition.

Artist Statement

Para-site series:

para- : at or to one side of, beside, next to, beyond (from gr. para)
-site : position, situation, location, state (from lat. situs)

The para-sites are site-specific installations deeply informed by the place they inhabit that transform the environment perceptually.

They build up spatial configurations in time, parallel to the real architecture only suggested to the observer through three-dimensional drawings in motion made of video-projected light and shadow.

The result is an overlap of the already existing space and the one generated by the observer’s perception.

About The Artist

Pablo Valbuena develops art projects and research focused on space, time, and perception. Born in Spain and currently based in the south of France. Some key elements of this exploration are the overlap of the physical and the virtual, the generation of mental spaces by the observer, the dissolution of the boundaries between real and perceived, the links between space and time, the primacy of subjective experience as a tool to communicate and the use of light as prime matter. These ideas are mostly developed site-specific and formulated as a direct response to the perceptual qualities, physical conditions, and surrounding influences of a certain location or space. This body of work has been presented in public and private institutions, biennials, and galleries in the form of exhibitions, site-specific commissions, and large-scale public interventions throughout Europe, Asia, and America.

He has presented his work recently at the Museum of the Moving Image, 5th International Seoul Biennale, OK Center for Contemporary Art, Laboral Centro de Arte, Netherlands Media Arts Institute, BankArt, Matadero Madrid, Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei, gallery Max Estrella in Madrid and others. He has also presented public art projects in Singapore, Canada, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, USA, Brazil and Spain. His large site-specific interventions in the public space have been seen in The Hague City Hall, Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo, Plaza de las Letras-Medialab Prado, Murcia City Hall and Vooruit-Ghent University.
