John Schulman

Rummy ~ Rumi

2003

This play is a reflection on the (im)possibility of accepting diversity and the other. The fragmented body of the neoplasm—the fruit of unstable conditions—overcomes barriers, loves and denies itself and others, wanders around, forgetting its profession. It frequently and with pleasure divides, goes through dangerous palpation, questions the possibility of contact with the experience of the other. Poorly brought up but very successful, it invites us to a trans-species transition.

John Schulman is a poet and an antiquarian bookseller. A poem, in fact a sestina, is read at the opening of this exhibition, but copies are available in the installation. The poet-bookseller reflects on the destruction of Baghdad's library with surprising local and national references. Visitors are invited to take home a volume from the bookcase either to read it or burn it.
