Robert Qualters

Working with Poets

2001

The artist transcribes and illuminates the work of other artists with his own intuitions.

This play is a reflection on the (im)possibility of accepting diversity and the other. The fragmented body of the neoplasm—the fruit of unstable conditions—overcomes barriers, loves and denies itself and others, wanders around, forgetting its profession. It frequently and with pleasure divides, goes through dangerous palpation, questions the possibility of contact with the experience of the other. Poorly brought up but very successful, it invites us to a trans-species transition.

Bob Qualters has invited other artists and poets to collaborate with him. Starting with a poem by the poet Neruda, illustrated collaboratively with Jan Beatty, one wall led to another. Poets Jay Carson, Gail Ghai and Sam Hazo provide texts: Qualters transcribes and illuminates the material with his own intuitions. Yet again traces of the studio and the domestic environment are found in the space.
